Introducing RSPEC DFS-R500 Optical Emission Spectrometer

JS Analytical's new Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
RSPEC focuses on the design, production & servicing of spectral instruments, which allows users to do spectra analysis onto sample and materials that one desires to evaluate.

(Middle) Joe, JS Analytical's Sales Manager, was attending an Optical Emission Spectrometer (OES) training that was conducted by our RSPEC Principals from Russia.

General Overview on the DFS-R500 from RSPEC:

RSPEC’s DFS-R500 Optical Emission Spectrometer is an indispensable tool for industries that deal with Metallurgy, Engineering, Casting & Foundry, Automotive, Oil & Gas and Education.

The instrument is used to do express analysis and grade identification on metals and alloys, aluminium oxides, soils and other ferrous materials. The product can also detect and analyse non-ferrous metal & alloys like sulfur, phosphorus and carbon.

Optical System:

RSPEC’s DFS-R500 uses a high-quality of optical system with a focal length of 500mm Paschen-Runge.

To ensure spatial stability of the spectrum, all the optical elements are installed on a stable platform.

Its light detectors are linear
CCD (charge-coupled device) arrays, specially mounted without blind zones, to record analytical signals from the entire spectral range.

Compared to separated spectral lines measurements using photo-multiplier tubes, CCD arrays provide virtually unlimited analytical capabilities for metal and alloy analysis in a single instrument.

Note: The average bench-top CCD units tend to have a smaller chamber (350-400 mm).

For having a focal length of 500 mm. This helps with getting the best optimal wavelength from every analysis, with high-accuracy.

Sample Stand:

The sample stand construction is optimized to reduce argon* consumption.

*Argon - is a rare type of gas that constitutes about 1% of our atmosphere and it is commonly used in electric lighting bulbs, etc.

The absence of the upper-housing and sample-clamp mechanism, makes analysis easier for samples with various shapes and sizes.

The spark chamber is easy to clean and does not need to be dissembled, in any way.

Its closed-cycled water cooling system, eliminates any form of heat coming from the sample stand.

The DFS-R500 also has special adapters for thin-rods & wire analysis.

The Spectrometer can analyse alloys such as:

Low carbon steel, Mild steel, Stainless steel, Cast iron, Nickel alloy, Aluminium alloy, Copper alloy, Tin alloy, Lead alloy, Titanium alloy, Zinc alloys, Magnesium base alloys, etc.

Software Program:

The DFS-R500 comes with a very powerful software called the ‘WinCCD’. It is designed for data-processing and hardware control in modern atomic emission spectrometers, based on multi-channel CCD detectors.

WinCCD allows users to:
  • Record emission spectra in the full spectral range of the spectrometer.
  • Perform qualitative analysis on unknown samples.
And WinCCD also has, a friendly-user interface that is easy to use without any special training.

Product Benefit:

The long-term benefit of getting the DFS-R500 is for its high-performance yet low investment cost.

Product Origin:

The DFS-R500 is designed & made in Europe by a team of experienced engineers.

RSPEC’s List of Standardisation:

RSPEC has more than 25 years of experience in the field of elemental emission analysis.

For the development of their job-scope, they complied with a unique library of standards from:

MBH from UK, Techlab from Finland, IMZ from Poland, IARM from USA, CRIM & CRISM from Russia, and many more...

Other Spectrometers Offered by JS Analytical's RSPEC:

  1. DFS-R500V - has 2 sample stands than of the DFS-R500. The external stand allows it users to do analysis of the elemental composition of larger materials that may be too big or heavy to place on the standard table of the DFS-R500 spectrometer. The length of the cable allows you to analyse the details and assemblies of various shapes and dimensions.
  2. MFS-R11 - allows it users to analyse the deterioration of engines and other mechanisms, through motor and transmission oils analysis.
  3. MFS-R12 - is designed for different material analysis of powders, ferrous and non-ferrous metal samples of various shapes and sizes.

Introducing ElektroPhysik Coating Thickness Gauge MiniTest 700 series by Obsnap Instruments

What is a Coating Thickness Gauge?

Also known as a paint meter or mil gauge, it can be used to measure dry film thickness* (DFT).

*DFT measurement helps us to evaluate a coating's useful-life, its appearance & performance, including compliance to International Standards.

coating's thickness does not only determine its protection against corrosion, it also helps to avoid premature failure of its protection when applied onto a metal and non-metal substrates, like metal, wood, etc.

coating thickness gauge helps with ensuring if a coating's thickness is at its
optimum state after it is applied onto a substrate.

The industries that are known to analyse the DFT of their products are Automotive and Coat & Paint Industries. Or anyone who needs to measure the coating thickness of a product.

ElektroPhysik Coating Thickness Gauge - MiniTest 700 series are one of the coating thickness gauges, marketed by Obsnap Instruments.

Introduction to the 5S Kaizen (改善) Methodology by Obsnap Group.

On 20 February 2017, Monday,

Obsnap Group’s CEO, Ng Shone Fone, returned from a 3-day seminar event conducted from Money & You®, since last Friday (17 February) at Holiday Villa Subang, Malaysia.

The event he attended, focused on how one can manage their networking skills, develop one’s leadership skills, mastering the ability to create open & active working environment, etc.

While he was at the event, Ng told us during our weekly meeting that he met a friend there.

His friend, Alvin, the managing director a metal-works company that specialises on the cutting of metal components & materials with the CNC Plasma & Flame Cutting System.

As Ng began chatting away with his friend, Alvin, told our boss that the market was ‘moving’ for him, however, Alvin’s circle, who were also in the same industry as him, were not doing as well.
This piqued my boss’s attention to ask Alvin to share how he managed his company.

Alvin told our boss that he gave each of his Head of Department (HoD) staff, full & total responsibility to take care of the company’s 5S* within the company.

The 5S Kaizen (改善) Methodology - White Edition by Obsnap Group

The 5S Kaizen (改善) Methodology - Black Edition by Obsnap Group

=====================================================================
The 5S is a methodology that focuses on the management of Standardisation & Discipline within an organisation. While applying the kaizen* (改善) mind-set.

*Kaizen: A Japanese philosophy of achieving ‘continuous improvement’ on work practices like workflow efficiency & effectiveness, staff responsibilities, etc.

The 5S is consist of the following words:

·   Seiri - 整理:
o   To sort out, all tools, materials, utilities, software, etc., within a work-area or workstation while only keeping the needed and essential items.
o   Everything else is kept in storage or rejected.
§  This create less clutter & hazards within a work-space and helps with improving on work productivity.

·   Seiton - 整頓:
o   To set things in an orderly manner. Once the items have been sorted, they are arranged systematically accordingly to its type, usage & by priority too.
§  By removing any wastage* within a workstation. This will create conveniency & efficiency when getting into future work projects and assignments because there will be no workflow obstructions.

*Wastage – refer to Taiichi Ohno’s 7 types of wastes.

·   Seiso - 清掃:
o   To shine, with keeping the workplace as clean & neat as possible. Japanese companies are known to make this step a daily chore.
§  Usually at the end of each shift the work area is can be checked on cleaned up and all items are returned to their designated areas.
§  This step also advises us to regularly check on a designated area’s utilities, equipment, tools, etc. to check for any potential defects or safety hazards.
·         This helps with maintaining the progress with one’s standard and quality with their work.

·   Seiketsu - 清潔:
o   To standardise, amongst the staff to always be in control, aware & consistent with their activities in accordance to the company’s regulations, systems and standards.
§  So that everyone knows what are their responsibilities. And that they are always updated and aware of the company’s progress or dilemmas.
§  This will develop a communicative-driven environment in a workplace encourages staff to discussions amongst themselves. Thus creating work order, effectiveness & efficiency.

·   Shitsuke - :
o   To sustain and maintain the current progress & standards of the organisation, with regular check-up.
§  This step focuses on inspecting the organisation’s standard regular to check if all is well, if not, the 5S process will be repeated again to find solutions to any dilemma found.
§  This step prioritises on providing staff training & discipline. Along with, having audits to check on productivity, quality, morale, etc.
=============================================================================
For applying the 5S method, this is how Alvin’s company is doing well; below are one of the things that they did:

HoD made it often to do Training & Reporting sessions with their colleagues during their work on alternative Saturdays.

Mr. Ng mentioned that it is the responsibility of each of the HoD to update all the staff under them, on the progress or the dilemmas that needs to be notified and settled immediately; so that no one is left out in the dark.

Ng said that this will “show the way how we approach our clients, our responsibility (accountability), our professionalism (emphasis on updating our knowledge on our job-scope) and our performance.”

Ng added that “it is (also) a matter of how we manage our time.”

We would like to end this read with a quote from our boss:

“Create a great process to progress; having a great process, brings us efficiency.

What is Heat Treatment and How to Measure its Final Results?

An image of a Heat Treatment Process used on a metallic component. Image source: (1)

For companies and industries that deal with metallic structures or components like: gas piping, automotive parts, material-testing, building infrastructure, etc.

Many metallic industrial & engineering materials, are usually modified by a metallurgy process known as heat treatment, which toughens up the treated materials to withstand specific operational conditions while improving its useful-life.

Heat treatment is the process of exposing a mechanical or metallic parts to mild and/or extreme temperature of heat and/or cooling environments. This allows the user to change the items’ physical and mechanical properties; sometimes its shape too. (2)

Although the heat treatment process is mostly used to harden a metallic material to increase its hardness strength. Other properties like its: shape, formability, springiness, malleability, etc. can also be altered, treated & mended until the wanted result is achieved; however, this happens only during its hardening process.

How can we measure the end-result of the component’s hardness, to check if it has achieved the desired result?

A Portable Hardness Tester - TIME5350 Portable Hardness Tester.

Obsnap Instruments has a Portable Hardness Tester known as the TIME5350 Portable Hardness Tester.

Based on the testing principle of the Leeb rebound hardness test method, the TIME5330 portable hardness tester can test the hardness of various types of metals and alloys, fast, conveniently and on-the-go.

Below are the types of metal and alloys that can be tested with the TIME5350:

Steel, cast steel, alloyed steel, stainless steel, grey cast iron, nodular cast iron, cast aluminium alloy, copper zinc alloy (brass), copper tin alloy (bronze), pure copper, forging steel, etc.

John from Proheat Treatment Precision Sdn Bhd, is testing the TIME5350 on an old steel block to check its hardness level.

The steel block that John tested on, gave a measurement 57.9 HRC upon the first-try.
