The main feature of the GPT-9804 is that it is a 4-in-1 tester, capable of performing tests on:
- AC withstanding (ACW)
- DC withstanding (DCW)
- Insulation resistance (IR)
- Ground bonding (GB)
ACW test - Allows manufacturers to check on electronics that uses alternating current (AC) e.g. devices that can only be used when plugged into a power source like an AC power sockets that are usually found on the walls of buildings.
DCW test - Allows manufacturers to check on electronics that uses direct current (DC) e.g. electronic devices that uses batteries or solar powered systems installed on device.
How do the manufacturers check on an electronic device with ACW and DCW?
They can use the Electric Safety Tester to pulse e.g. 1000 volts into a device to see how much voltage can their product withstand, just to see when it will burn-out or short-circuit. Even if the device can withstand only about 250 volts, manufacturers still need to analyse what will happen if too much voltage enters their electronic device, to see if it can withstand over-voltage too.
IR test - Focuses on finding out the insulation strength (opposite of conductivity) on the parts of the electronic device/equipment.
This test is to find out how good is the insulation material and that it is properly insulated too. This will provide and ensure protection from electrical hazards onto the potential user of the electrical or electronic device.
This test is also an early detector and a preventive measure to make sure that potential users in the future are protected from experiencing potential leakage (electricity penetrating the layer of the insulated part of the product) that might harm the user in the process of making contact with it (since we can’t see the the leakage with our bare eyes).
GB test - Focuses on making sure that the product’s ground cable/conductor is working within the electrical device.
A ground cable/conductor, is a safety feature within electronic device/equipment that allows the leakage within the device to reach a safe-spot (to the earth/ground).
The “ground" is usually idealised as an infinite source and sink (where current enters or exits a system).
The ground cable/conductor is usually the most conductive part of the electronic device/equipment to make sure that it attracts all leakage electricity so that it does not linger within the product, especially areas that is not well-insulated to contain the electricity.
